Canada Considers Tariffs on Chinese Imports
Canada is contemplating imposing tariffs on a variety of Chinese imports, with a significant focus on electric vehicles (EVs). This move is part of a broader strategy to protect the Canadian automotive industry from perceived unfair trade practices by China, including state subsidies leading to market overcapacity. The consultation period for this decision will begin on July 2, 2024, and a final decision is expected shortly thereafter. The potential tariffs could go into effect as early as the fall of 2024. This initiative aligns Canada with similar actions taken by the U.S. and the EU to safeguard their respective industries.
